I’ve wanted to find out more about my family’s past for a long time, but didn’t quite know how to start.  Fortunately, I ran across a guide that has been really helpful in getting me organized to do online genealogy research and to finally be able to build a family tree. First, I should tell you that I’m biased because I’m a big fan of eBooks.  I like the fact that they are available immediately and I can store them on my hard drive.  I especially like them for reference books (like this one) because I can print out the reference pages whenever I want to, have them handy while I’m using them to work online and make my own notes on them.  Now, back to the book.

“Family Roots: A Guide to Genealogy” is concise (36 pages long) and it’s all useful information (much better than a longer book full triple-spaced pages and useless filler). Here’s a brief  list of the topics that are covered:

I especially like the “ Genealogy Records Search“ chapter.  There is a great list of different kinds of records to look for.  I already knew about looking for the obvious ones, like birth certificates and marriage certificates, but there are pages of other records that I never would have thought of on my own.  This chapter makes a great checklist to use for making sure you’ve covered all of the bases as far a records are concerned.  And the author gives some great tips for keeping the data organized, with or without a computerized genealogy program.

The chapter on “Types of Genealogical Information” gives great advice for researching things like name and date changes.  For instance, spelling changes often happened in the past during immigration, and name changes could have occurred during an adoption process.  The author gives tips on when and how to look for alternate sources. She also tells how to handle birth date changes, and why some people may have deliberately changed these.

As for negatives, I would have to say that all of this information is available online on free sites if you want to take the time to search for it and compile it yourself.  But it would take me weeks or months, and I’d rather spend that time researching my family’s history.  So for me, it’s definitely worth the small price of the eBook to have all of these tips and research resources in one place.

Building a family tree online is not only fun to do, it can also help you track down even more relatives around the globe that you otherwise may never have even known existed.  But in order to do this you have start somewhere.  And the more accurate the information you start with, the more accurate your family tree will be.  Here are some tips on what kind of genealogy information you need, and how to get it in order to start your family tree online.

First, you need to start with some basic family information. A basic family tree with birth dates, death dates and marriage dates is a goo beginning.  Identify all of the information that you have been able to verify with certificates and records.  Also indicate which information is from people’s memories and has not yet been verified.  This will help your family tree avoid going off in wrong directions and will keep its information accurate.

Next, family pictures are helpful for people to see.  When you include current pictures of yourself, your immediate family, your close relatives and your ancestors everyone in the family gets to join in with the fun online.  Not only will you be able to start seeing some family resemblances show up, but you increase the probability that some of your distant relatives from across the county and around the world will recognize the picture of a common ancestor.  You will be making it possible for your family tree to grow, be more accurate and include relatives you may never have otherwise found.
